Presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, the concert "Requiem Through the Ages" by the Hong Kong Oratorio Society will be staged in October.
The Hong Kong Oratorio Society takes its name from its favourite genre, the oratorio, which refers to extended choral works with religious or mythological stories. Under the baton of Professor Chan Wing-wah, the choir will deliver works by Rutter, Bruckner, Faurˆm and Mozart.
Also performing in the concert are Korean soprano Lee Su-kyoung, baritone Petrus Cheung as well as the Hong Kong Strings, which is dedicated to promoting music to the public through demonstration concerts.
The Hong Kong Oratorio Society is one of the most active choirs with the longest history and the largest membership in Hong Kong. It usually presents five concerts per year, with a total of more than 300 concerts presented in the last 50 years. Its repertoire covers oratorios and major choral works by classical and contemporary composers. They include the masterpieces of Bach, Handel, Haydn, Mozart, Mendelssohn and Chinese composers Xian Xinghai and Huang Zi. Many of these works were debuted in Hong Kong. It has also gone on concert tours overseas and in major cities in Mainland China.
"Requiem Through the Ages" by the Hong Kong Oratorio Society will be performed at 8pm, October 23 (Saturday), at the Auditorium, Tsuen Wan Town Hall. A pre-concert talk in Cantonese on "Appreciation of Requiem" will be held at 7.30pm, on October 14 (Thursday), at AC2, 4/F, Administration Building, Hong Kong Cultural Centre. The speaker is the Associate Head and Principal Programme Director of the College of Humanities and Law, School of Professional and Continuing Education, the University of Hong Kong, Professor Chan Wing-wah. Admission is free.
