Carnival-goers enjoyed the Mid-Autumn Lantern Carnival presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department at Victoria Park tonight (September 22) featuring a series of entertaining programmes and lantern installations.
Among the attractions were Chinese songs and dances and acrobatics performed by the Changbai Korean Nationality Autonomous County Song and Dance Ensemble of Jilin Province and Hebei Acrobatics and Magical Group of China. Other programmes included a fire dragon dancing parade, a pop concert, Chinese traditional stage arts, Chinese instrumental music, a film show, an origami workshop, a make-a-wish corner, a lantern quiz and fortune-telling.
To add lustre to the occasion, lantern installations featuring Chinese folk arts such as calligraphy and painting, paper cutting, porcelain, shadow play and masks for Chinese traditional opera were on display and filled the park with a festive atmosphere.
The LCSD will present another lantern carnival tomorrow (September 23) at Tai Po Waterfront Park from 7.30pm to 10.30pm. The Changbai Korean Nationality Autonomous County Song and Dance Ensemble of Jilin Province and Hebei Acrobatics and Magical Group of China will also perform at the carnival. Other programmes include Chinese instrumental music, a cappella and music theatre, site-specific dance, a film show, an origami workshop, a make-a-wish corner, a lantern quiz and fortune-telling. There will be lantern installations of lovely dolls in different ethnic costumes, Taiwan sky lanterns, and displays featuring the North Pole, Africa tropical rainforest and subtropical ocean.
There are also thematic lantern exhibitions: "The Rhapsody of Hong Kong Memories" is running at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre Piazza until October 17, and "All about the Moon" at West Kowloon Waterfront Promenade until September 24.
"The Rhapsody of Hong Kong Memories" exhibition at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre depicts the daily lives of Hong Kong people since the 1960s. It is a collection of scenes of old Hong Kong, bringing back cherished memories of those days. "All about the Moon" at West Kowloon Waterfront Promenade features stories about the moon in various countries, displaying how their rituals and traditions related to myths about the moon.
An exhibition featuring the winning designs and all entries of the 2010 Mid-Autumn Lantern Design Competition is being held at the Exhibition Hall, 1/F, Low Block, Hong Kong City Hall, until September 25.
People are urged not to litter and burn wax while celebrating the festival.
