The Census and Statistics Department (C&SD) published today (September 20) the September 2010 issue of the Hong Kong Monthly Digest of Statistics (HKMDS).
In this issue, four feature articles entitled "Composite Employment Estimates 2009", "Socio-economic Characteristics of Hong Kong Residents Making Personal Travel to the Mainland of China, 2009", "Statistics on Comprehensive Social Security Assistance Scheme, 1999 to 2009" and "The Asset Management Industry in Hong Kong" are included.
"Composite Employment Estimates 2009"
In the study of employment statistics, there is a common problem arising from the discrepancies observed between the employment data obtained from establishment-based surveys which refer to occupied posts in firms, and those data obtained from household surveys which refer to persons employed. In Hong Kong, this issue is tackled through the compilation of a set of Composite Employment Estimates (CEE) which reconcile, under a designated statistical framework, the results obtained from the household-based General Household Survey and the establishment-based Quarterly Survey of Employment and Vacancies.
According to the CEE, the overall employment in Hong Kong in 2009 was 3 486 900, less than that in the previous year by 1.0%. "Import and export trade" was the largest industry group in terms of employment. It employed 522 100 persons or 15.0% of overall employment. The next largest industry groups were "other social and personal services", engaging 367 300 persons or 10.5% of employment share, and "transportation, storage, postal and courier services", engaging 321 400 persons or 9.2%.
This feature article provides the CEE figures for 2004 to 2009, based on the Hong Kong Standard Industrial Classification Version 2.0. It also gives an account of the characteristics of CEE and briefly discusses the differences and usage of the CEE vis-ˆj-vis the other employment figures.¡@¡@¡@¡@

Among the trips in respect of personal travel by Hong Kong residents to the Mainland, 26.7 million person-trips were made by employed persons.
