Authorisation for safety training courses withdrawn
***************************************************

     The Labour Department has, upon the application of Safety Specialist Services Limited (SSSL), decided to withdraw the recognitions/approvals granted to SSSL under the Factories and Industrial Undertakings Ordinance (Cap. 59), the Factories and Industrial Undertakings (Confined Spaces) Regulation (Cap. 59AE) and the Factories and Industrial Undertakings (Loadshifting Machinery) Regulation (Cap. 59AG) for running eight safety training courses and the authorisations to issue relevant certificates.  The withdrawal takes effect on September 17, 2010.

     The eight courses being withdrawn are:

(i)  Mandatory Basic Safety Training Revalidation Course for Employees in the Construction Industry (Chinese Course);
(ii)  Mandatory Basic Safety Training Revalidation Course for Employees in the Construction Industry (English Course);
(iii)  Revalidation Safety Training Course for Certified Workers in Confined Spaces Operations (Chinese Course);
(iv)  Revalidation Safety Training Course for Certified Workers in Confined Spaces Operations (English Course);
(v)  Safety Training Course for Competent Persons in Confined Spaces Operations (Chinese Course);
(vi)  Safety Training Course for Competent Persons in Confined Spaces Operations (English Course);
(vii)  Safety Training Course for New Operators and Experienced Operators of Dumper; and
(viii)  Safety Training Course for New Operators and Experienced Operators of Compactor.

     A spokesman for the Labour Department said that SSSL wrote to surrender the recognitions/approvals of these eight courses. The Commissioner for Labour has accepted its proposal and withdrawn the recognitions/approvals of these eight courses accordingly. The withdrawal will not affect the validity of certificates issued by SSSL for these courses before the effective date.  Information on mandatory safety training courses is available on the Labour Department's website (www.labour.gov.hk/eng/osh/content5.htm).

     The spokesman explained that since the recognition of courses (i) and (ii) by the Commissioner for Labour was published by notice in the gazette in accordance with legal requirements, the relevant notice of withdrawal of these courses was also published in the gazette.

     "Workers requiring more information are welcome to call the Occupational Safety and Health Training Centre hotline on 2940 7076 or the department's occupational safety and health advisory telephone service hotline on 2559 2297," said the spokesman.
