Six employers ordered to pay MPF contributions

The following is issued on behalf of the Mandatory Provident Fund Schemes Authority:

     The Mandatory Provident Fund Schemes Authority (MPFA) today (September 15) obtained an order for payment of outstanding MPF contributions of about $52,000 against an employer in the District Court.

     The District Court today granted a judgment against the employer, Waheungai Company Limited. The defendant was ordered to pay the MPFA $52,287.25, being mandatory contributions in arrears and surcharges payable to three employees.

     Meanwhile, the MPFA pursued five claims in the Small Claims Tribunal for some $84,000 on behalf of 11 employees, who were owed MPF contributions by their employers.

     At the Tribunal's hearing today, one of the defendants, Eternal Ethos Limited, did not dispute the amounts claimed. The Adjudicator ordered it to pay the MPFA $25,343.11, being mandatory contributions in arrears and surcharges payable.

     The other four defendants, namely Forever Printing Company Limited, Eds Express Network Limited, Acqua Limited and Wu Kut Lam & Chiu Man Yu Angel trading as Tai Fat Trading Company, did not appear. In their absence, the Adjudicator ordered them to pay the MPFA $42,732.18, $14,679.98, $729.92 and $666.52 respectively, being mandatory contributions in arrears and surcharges payable.

     The amounts awarded at both the District Court and the Tribunal will be reimbursed to the employees' MPF accounts as soon as they are received by the MPFA. The District Court ordered the defendant to pay the costs of $930. The Tribunal ordered the five defendants to pay $120, $176, $96, $118 and $102 respectively as the costs in respect of the claims.
