Appointments to Expert Committee on Food Safety

     The Government announced today (September 13) the re-appointment of Professor Kwan Hoi-shan as chairman of the Expert Committee on Food Safety.

     Meanwhile, the appointment of five new members and re-appointment of 14 incumbent members to the Expert Committee are also announced.

     All the appointments are for a term of two years with effect from September 15.

     Four new members are local representatives. They are Professor Annisa Lee Lai Chung-hing, Dr Edmund Li Tsze-shing, Ms Lina Lim Lay-nak and Dr Wong Man-sau. The new overseas member is Professor Qiao Xiong-wu.  

     Professor Lee is an Assistant Professor in the School of Journalism and Communication at the Chinese University of Hong Kong.¡@She also serves as a member of the Mass Communications Training Board of the Vocational Training Council.

     Dr Li is an Associate Professor in the School of Biological Sciences at the University of Hong Kong. He is knowledgeable in food and nutritional sciences and has published a number of research articles on the subjects.

     Ms Lim is the General Manager ¡V Quality Assurance of A.S. Watson Industries, Hong Kong. She is a registered pharmacist in Hong Kong and Singapore.

     Dr Wong is an Associate Professor in the Department of Applied Biology and Chemical Technology at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Her expertise is in molecular nutrition and food sciences. She has published a number of research articles on the subjects.
   
     Professor Qiao is the Deputy Head of the Shanxi Academy of Agricultural Sciences and the Director of Shanxi Key Laboratory of Pesticide Science.  He is also the Chair of the Codex Committee on Pesticide Residues.    

     The Secretary for Food and Health, Dr York Chow, welcomed the new members and those re-appointed to the Expert Committee. He said he looked forward to their contribution in providing valuable counsel to the Director of Food and Environmental Hygiene on strategic and operational aspects of different food safety issues.

     Dr Chow also thanked the outgoing members - Ms Catherine Au Sin-lun, Professor Peter Cheung Chi-keung, Ms Cecilia Kung Yin-ha, Dr Lau Fei-lung and Professor Jiang Yu-lin - for their valuable advice to the Expert Committee during their term of appointment.

     The Expert Committee advises the Director of Food and Environmental Hygiene on existing or new food safety operational strategies and measures to protect public health. It also sets standards/guidelines relating to food safety and food composition having regard to international practices, trends and developments.
