Legislative Council Panel on Food Safety and Environmental Hygiene continued its duty visit to Japan (with photos)

     The Legislative Council Panel on Food Safety and Environmental Hygiene today (September 10) continued its duty visit to Sapporo, Japan, and will meet with representatives of the Hokkaido Fisheries Coordination Office, Fisheries Agency, to understand its supporting mechanism for the fisheries industry. The delegation will also visit the Otaru-shi Fisheries Cooperative Association to exchange views with local fishermen on ways to promote and sustain fisheries industry.

     On its first day of visit in Sapporo yesterday (September 9), the delegation visited the Hokkaido Federation of Fisheries Cooperative Associations to learn about its operation. Established in 1949, the Associations have 16 offices and ten subsidiary companies. The major activities of the Associations include sales and marketing of fishery products; sourcing fuels and materials for members to reduce their operating costs; advising members on conservation and management of fishery resources and conducting education activities for members. As at April 1, 2010, the Associations had 82 members.

     The delegation also visited the Gyoren Sogo Food Processing Factory, a subsidiary of the Hokkaido Federation of Fisheries Cooperative Associations, and the Sato Suisan Salmon Factory, to understand the operation of these establishments.
