Budgie, the legendary British drummer from rock band Siouxsie and The Banshees, Japanese taiko master Leonard Eto and conga king Mabi from South Africa have linked up to form Triptych, an East-West percussion collaboration. Teamed with Japanese top rock guitarist Sugizo and New York's renowned guitarist Knox Chandler, these five leading musicians will make their Hong Kong debut in November in a star-studded show of creative energy.
Featuring the trio's Western drum kit, Japanese taiko and African drums, along with guitar, violin and cello by the two guitarists, "The Butterfly Effect: East-West Percussive Parade" is a vibrant and intuitive drumming extravaganza and musical experience full of serendipity and passion.
World premiered in Hong Kong, the show is one of the programmes of the New Vision Arts Festival organised by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department. It will be held on November 6 at 8pm and November 7 at 3pm at the Sha Tin Town Hall Auditorium.
The inspiration for bringing together master drummers from different countries came from Budgie, the innovative drummer renowned for his eclectic style. Alongside Budgie are Japan's taiko master Leonard Eto, who has collaborated with him on The Creatures' 2003 album "Hai!" and performed on the subsequent "Dreamshow" tour in 2004; and Mabi, one of South Africa's most venerable jazz and fusion musicians who is also known for making his own drums. The powerful rhythms of the drummers' arms, just like the flap of a butterfly's wings, will create an unbeatable show that rides the musical waves.
Adding to the excitement is Japan's towering rock guitarist Sugizo from superbands Luna Sea and X Japan. He is also a renowned composer and violinist. Also on stage is New York's acclaimed guitarist Knox Chandler who has performed with many popular acts and artists. Together, these two special guests create music that floats and entwines with the rhythms of the drummers to produce a concert of stunning impact.
In the programme are improvised solos and ensemble works as well as new pieces and arrangements specially created for the New Vision Arts Festival, inspired by the pace, rhythm and character of Hong Kong.
Tickets for the "The Butterfly Effect: East-West Percussive Parade" priced at $340, $260, $180, $120 are now available at URBTIX. Half-price tickets are available for full-time students, senior citizens aged 60 and above, people with disabilities and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance recipients. Group booking and package discounts of up to 20% are available.
