The Education Bureau (EDB) today (September 10) launched the 2010 "My Pledge to Act - To show our care, to uphold our integrity and to pursue our goal" at Christian & Missionary Alliance Sun Kei Secondary School.

The 2010 Pledge Day aims to rally the efforts of parents, schools and the community to help students develop positive values and attitudes towards life in order to foster a caring society, and to extend that spirit to the society and the nation.

About 1,000 students of Christian & Missionary Alliance Sun Kei Secondary School participated in the ceremony.

Officiating guests came from different sectors of the community to signify the joint efforts to promote moral and civic education. They were the Deputy Secretary for Education, Dr Catherine K K Chan; founder of the China Polar Museum Foundation, Dr Rebecca Lee Lok-sze; psychiatrist Dr Tsang Fan-kwong; the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Outstanding Student (2006), Miss Jenny Wong Tse-yuen; Principal of Christian & Missionary Alliance Sun Kei Secondary School, Miss Halina Poon Suk-han; and the Chairman of the Federation of Parent-Teacher Association of Sai Kung District, Mr Tse Chiu-man. The guests read the pledge and signed the pledge form with the students.

In a sharing session, Dr Chan stressed that helping students set goals in life will facilitate the nurturing of their personal qualities. Other guests also shared their views on the importance of setting goals.

The EDB is committed to promoting Moral and Civic Education (MCE) which is an essential element of whole-person education. MCE was identified as one of the four key tasks in the curriculum reform launched in 2001 and has gained wide support from the education sector. The promotion of values is closely connected with the learning and teaching of key subjects and related activities in schools.

The Pledge Day is one of the signature events organised for schools by the EDB. Schools are encouraged to draw up a yearly plan to strengthen values education at the beginning of the school year, and to formulate implementation strategies to help students realise the pledge. To help schools map out their implementation plans, relevant resources are available on the Education Bureau's MCE webpage (www.edb.gov.hk/cd/mcne) for teachers' reference.
