The Legislative Council Panel on Food Safety and Environmental Hygiene began its four-day duty visit to Tokyo and Sapporo, Japan today (September 8).
The purpose of the visit is for Members to gain a better insight into the experience and operation of Japan's columbarium facilities and fisheries industry. The delegation will also exchange views with officials involved in safeguarding food safety.
During its stay in Tokyo, the delegation will meet with the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare to understand Japan's policy on columbarium development in meeting public demand for columbarium facilities. Meanwhile, the delegation will discuss with officials on the country's food safety surveillance system and countermeasures against food poisoning. The delegation will also visit a private multi-storey columbarium and a park-type cemetery run by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government.
The delegation will depart for Sapporo on September 9. During its stay in Sapporo, the delegation will meet with the Hokkaido Fisheries Coordination Office of the Fisheries Agency to learn about its supporting mechanism for the fisheries industry. The delegation will also visit a variety of fisheries associations and the Sapporo Central Wholesale Markets to learn about the set up and operation of these establishments.
