The Legislative Council Panel on Food Safety and Environmental Hygiene began its duty visit to Japan

The following is issued on behalf of the Legislative Council Secretariat:

     The Legislative Council Panel on Food Safety and Environmental Hygiene began its four-day duty visit to Tokyo and Sapporo, Japan today (September 8).

     The purpose of the visit is for Members to gain a better insight into the experience and operation of Japan's columbarium facilities and fisheries industry. The delegation will also exchange views with officials involved in safeguarding food safety.

     During its stay in Tokyo, the delegation will meet with the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare to understand Japan's policy on columbarium development in meeting public demand for columbarium facilities. Meanwhile, the delegation will discuss with officials on the country's food safety surveillance system and countermeasures against food poisoning. The delegation will also visit a private multi-storey columbarium and a park-type cemetery run by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government.

     The delegation will depart for Sapporo on September 9. During its stay in Sapporo, the delegation will meet with the Hokkaido Fisheries Coordination Office of the Fisheries Agency to learn about its supporting mechanism for the fisheries industry. The delegation will also visit a variety of fisheries associations and the Sapporo Central Wholesale Markets to learn about the set up and operation of these establishments.
 
     The itinerary of the visit is as follows:

September 8, 2010 (Wednesday)

10am     Visit to the Ministry of Health, Labour
         and Welfare

2pm      Visit to the Tama Cemetery
 
4.30pm   Visit to the Tokyo Gobyo

September 9, 2010 (Thursday)

9.30am   Departure from Tokyo for Sapporo

11.05am  Arrival in Sapporo

1.30pm   Visit to the Hokkaido Federation of
         Fisheries Cooperative Associations

2.40pm   Visit to the Gyoren Sogo Food Processing
         Factory

4pm      Visit to the Sato Suisan Salmon Factory
 
September 10, 2010 (Friday)

9.30am   Visit to the Hokkaido Fisheries Coordination
         Office, Fisheries Agency

1.30pm   Visit to the Otaru-shi Fisheries Cooperative
         Association

September 11, 2010 (Saturday)

5am      Visit to the Sapporo Central Wholesale
         Markets

4.40pm   Depart from Sapporo for Hong Kong

8.50pm   Arrival in Hong Kong

     The delegation is led by Hon Fred Li Wah-ming, Chairman of the Panel on Food Safety and Environmental Hygiene.  Other Members include Hon Wong Yung-kan, Hon Tam Yiu-chung, Dr Hon Joseph Lee Kok-long, Dr Hon Leung Ka-lau (Panel members), Hon Chan Kam-lam, Hon Lau Kong-wah, Hon Li Fung-ying and Hon Chan Hak-kan (non-Panel Members).
