In response to media enquiries regarding barging point facilities at Telegraph Bay for the construction of South Island Line (East) as outlined in a leaflet distributed in the Southern District, a Transport and Housing Bureau spokesman said today (September 4) that the information was misrepresented.
The spokesman said: "We need to clarify that firstly, the proposed barging activity will last for 2 years from 2012 to end 2013, instead of up to 2015.
Secondly, the size of the barging point will be entirely the same as the existing one, not doubled by adding an extra point. It has been clearly indicated in the relevant gazette amendment that the existing barging point will be used. An alternative site adjacent to the existing one has been marked as a backup in case the existing barging point cannot be used. That means only one, not both, of the proposed locations will be used in reality.
Lastly, we have no intention to make the barging point a permanent facility. In fact, we are planning to turn the facility into public open space with suitable recreational facilities when the project comes to an end. We are fully prepared to listen to public views on these future facilities.
We have informed the Southern District Council of the above in writing and they have no objection to the arrangements."
