New Chief Justice sworn in (with photos/video)

The following is issued on behalf of the Judiciary:

     The new Chief Justice of the Court of Final Appeal Geoffrey Ma Tao-li was sworn in today (September 3) in a ceremony at Government House.

     The Chief Justice took the Judicial Oath which was administered by the Chief Executive, Mr Donald Tsang.

     Chief Justice Ma gave a commitment to uphold the Basic Law and to serve Hong Kong conscientiously, dutifully, in full accordance with the law, honestly and with integrity.

     He also pledged to bear allegiance to Hong Kong, safeguard the law and administer justice without fear or favour, self-interest or deceit.

     Speaking at the swearing-in ceremony, the Chief Executive said: "Chief Justice Ma has rich judicial experience.  As Chief Judge of the High Court, his outstanding performance was well recognised.  I have every confidence that Chief Justice Ma will excel in his new job."

     Chief Justice Ma assumed office on September 1.  He said it was a great honour and privilege for him to be the Chief Justice and to be able to serve the people of Hong Kong.  

     The Chief Justice said that he was fully aware of his responsibilities, and would do his best to safeguard the rule of law and maintain the independence of the Judiciary.  

     Today marked a new chapter in his life to which he looked forward greatly, he added.
