Hong Kong's ink artists have shown the world their achievements over the decades in a large-scale exhibition "Legacy and Creations – Ink Art vs Ink Art", one of the major HKSAR cultural programmes presented at Expo 2010 Shanghai China.
Organised by the Hong Kong Museum of Art, the exhibition was jointly presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department and the Shanghai Art Museum. It was held from July 16 to August 9 at the Shanghai Art Museum, showing works by 46 Hong Kong ink artists, such as Zhao Shao'ang, Yang Shanshen, Ding Yanyong, Lui Shou-kwan, Liu Guosong, Wucius Wong, Wilson Shieh and Kan Tai-keung.
The spokesman for the Hong Kong Museum of Art said today (August 29) that the ink art exhibition had received an overwhelming response. The art community in Shanghai spoke highly of the exhibition, which had given the Shanghai audience a fresh understanding of ink art in Hong Kong. The exhibition had attracted wide media coverage as well as an impressive number of visitors. With total attendance of more than 32,000 and a daily average of more than 1,300 visitors, the 24-day exhibition was regarded by the Shanghai Art Museum as a highly successful event.
The spokesman noted that the academic seminar in Shanghai held in conjunction with the exhibition was warmly supported by Mainland and overseas artists and experts in ink art. More than 50 artists and experts voiced their opinions at the seminar, providing a good opportunity for exchanges among Hong Kong and Shanghai artists and scholars.
"What is most encouraging is that the exhibition and seminar attracted the interest of Mainland and overseas museums and cultural institutions in Hong Kong's ink art.
"The Hong Kong Museum of Art is following up with the interested museums including the Shenzhen Fine Art Institute on the proposal for Hong Kong to participate in 'The 7th International Ink Painting Biennial of Shenzhen' which will be held in December this year at Guanshanyue Art Museum, Shenzhen. This would be another opportunity for local artists to show the world the character and uniqueness of Hong Kong's ink art," the spokesman said.
The spokesman added that many enquiries from overseas museums and curators had also been received.
"We will actively explore the possibilities of collaborating with major overseas museums, like those in France and the United States, with a view to bringing Hong Kong's ink art from the territory to the global arena, thereby showing the world its diversity, creativity and artistic charm," the spokesman said.
