Cluster of human Metapneumovirus cases in a male psychiatric ward of Tai Po Hospital

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     The spokesperson for Tai Po Hospital (TPH) made the following announcement today (August 24):

     Thirteen patients (aged from 30 to 70) in a male psychiatric ward at Tai Po Hospital and one staff member have presented with upper respiratory symptoms since August 9. Appropriate tests were arranged for the patients. Seven of them tested positive for human Metapneumovirus. The patients are being treated under isolation and are in stable condition, while the staff member has recovered.

     Admission and visits to the ward are suspended and infection control measures in the ward have been stepped up. All other patients in the ward are under close surveillance.

     The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for follow up.
