Territory-wide campaign to promote driving safety
*************************************************

Police have concluded a territory-wide campaign to remind drivers of public service vehicles (PSV) and goods vehicles of the importance of safe driving.

This was the latest in an ongoing series of campaigns conducted by the Police in 2010 using publicity, education and enforcement to target moving traffic offences.

The campaign, codenamed ˇ§Kickstarterˇ¨, started on Monday (August 9) and ended last Sunday (August 22) and resulted in the issue of 62 verbal warnings, 388 summonses and 4,222 fixed penalty tickets as well as the arrests of 18 drivers for drink driving offences. Of the total number of summonses and fixed penalty tickets issued, 1,328 were issued for speeding, 725 for mobile phone offences, 385 for seat belt offence and 183 for failing to comply with traffic signals.

Officers from Police Regional Road Safety Teams visited 768 locations throughout the territory and distributed about 25,240 leaflets to drivers of public service vehicles and goods vehicles as well as members of the public.  The public was encouraged to report undesirable driving behavior to the Police or to the Transport Complaints Unit of the Transport Advisory Committee.

ˇ§The campaign is intended to enhance public awareness of road safety and to reduce traffic accidents,ˇ¨ a Police spokesman said.
