CE speaks on hostage incident in Manila (with photo/video)
**********************************************************

Following is the transcript of remarks by the Chief Executive, Mr Donald Tsang, at a media session at the Central Government Offices last night (August 23):

Reporter: (the way the Philippines Government handled the incident)

Chief Executive: We have immediately mobilised our resources and our emergency measures. We sent out our personnel to Manila almost at the first instant today. We have approached all possible resources particularly through our Foreign Ministry and our Ambassador in Manila to look after this incident and extend whatever help we can.

Reporter: (inaudible)

Chief Executive: Most regrettable. It is to me the outcome is very disappointing.

Reporter: You mentioned that the outcome is disappointing. Disappointing in what way?

Chief Executive: This is a major tragedy. Disappointing that Hong Kong residents tried to make a pleasure trip to Manila ended up with death and casualties. This is very tragic. And the way it was handled and particularly the outcome I found it disappointing.

Reporter: How do you feel the way the Philippines Government handled this incident?

Chief Executive: All I can say is I feel exceedingly sad that the outcome ended up with the death of Hong Kong people in this manner. What I am sure is that the outcome is disappointing. And I am sure all Hong Kong people including the Filipino citizens who happen to be residents in Hong Kong will feel the same way.
