Contractor fined for violation of safety rule

     W. Hing Construction Company Limited was fined $50,000 at Tuen Mun Magistrates' Court today (August 19) for violation of the Factories and Industrial Undertakings (Lifting Appliances and Lifting Gear) Regulations.  The prosecution was launched by the Labour Department.

     The case involved a fatal accident which occurred on November 10 last year on a construction site in Tuen Mun.  While a bundle of steel bars was being lifted by a crane, one of the steel bars fell and hit a worker who subsequently died.

     According to Regulation 7J(1)(b) of the Factories and Industrial Undertakings (Lifting Appliances and Lifting Gear) Regulations, the owner of a lifting appliance shall ensure that every part of a load to be raised or lowered by the lifting appliance is adequately secured.  Any owner who fails to do so is liable to a fine of $200,000.
