In view of the serious mudslide in Gansu Province on the Mainland, the Government proposes to donate $50 million to the Provincial Government of Gansu via the Disaster Relief Fund to provide relief for the mudslide victims, a government spokesman said today (August 13). The Government will seek the approval of the Legislative Council Finance Committee for the supplementary provision required.
"The Legislative Council is now in recess. The Finance Committee chairman has agreed to convene a special meeting as soon as possible to examine this application. We are most grateful for the committee's prompt response," the spokesman said.
The spokesman said the Government will promptly consult the Disaster Relief Fund Advisory Committee (DRFAC) once the funding application is approved by the Finance Committee so as to provide timely relief for the victims. The DRFAC will also consider adopting a special mechanism to enable the Government to respond quickly to applications from relief organisations with a view to providing relief to the victims speedily.
