Government issues Amber Outbound Travel Alert for Russia
********************************************************

In view of the health hazard to travellers (especially the elderly and the children) arising from the smog problem in Russia caused by persistent forest fires, and having considered the latest advice from countries such as Australia and Canada, the Government today (August 10) issued an Amber Outbound Travel Alert (OTA) for Russia.

A government spokesman said, "Those who plan to visit Russia should monitor the local situation.  The Department of Health (DH) also advised that persons with heart or respiratory diseases may seek medical advice before travelling.  Those already there should avoid prolonged or heavy outdoor exertion.  For details, please see DH's website (www.travelhealth.gov.hk/popup/english/popup.html)."

As we understand, the Hong Kong group tours currently in Russia are still continuing their itineraries and the scenic spots there in general remain open.

Residents who need assistance while outside Hong Kong may call the 24-hour hotline of the Assistance to Hong Kong Residents Unit of the Immigration Department (ImmD) at (852) 1868.  So far, ImmD has not received any assistance request relating to Russia's forest fires.
