Police concluded a territory-wide campaign to raise public awareness of safe cycling on July 30.
The Summer Safe Cycling Campaign was conducted from July 17 to 30 and resulted in the issue of 443 verbal warnings and 556 summonses to cyclists.
Officers from Police Regional Road Safety Teams visited 872 locations frequented by cyclists, including cycling tracks, railway stations and fast food shops employing cyclists and distributed 17,775 leaflets during the campaign.
The operation was the latest in an on-going series of campaigns conducted by Police in 2010 using a mix of publicity, education and enforcement actions to target cycling offences. It aimed at reminding cyclists of the importance of road safety and their legal responsibility. In addition, both cyclists and pedestrians were advised on the proper use of cycling tracks.
In the first six months in 2010, a total of 905 persons were injured and eight died in 878 traffic accidents which involved cyclists.
A police spokesman reminded cyclists that they should comply with road traffic legislation and any offenders will be subjected to fines and penalties similar to other road users.
