SEN visits Central and Western District (with photos)
*****************************************************

The Secretary for the Environment, Mr Edward Yau, visited Central and Western (C&W) District today (July 28) to see an initiative by the local community to promote waste recycling in the district and provide a chance for young people to participate in community services.

Mr Yau first met C&W District Council members at Harbour Building to hear their views on local environmental issues.

He then proceeded to 121C Plastic Recycling Centre which was part of the Source Separation of Waste Programme in C&W District and Mid-Levels, covering up to 130 buildings in the district.

Named after its location at 121C, Second Street, Sai Ying Pun, the centre provides waste plastic recycling services to local buildings with up to four to five tonnes of waste plastics collected every month. With further funding support from the Environment and Conservation Fund, the 121C Project has been extended to cover waste computers.

Mr Yau learned that besides promoting waste recycling, the 121C Project also worked with voluntary organisations to provide career training to youngsters by recruiting them as environmental protection or waste recycling ambassadors. In a chat with the youngsters participating in the 121C Project, Mr Yau said he was happy to see that they had seized this valuable opportunity to gain working experience and serve the community.

The final stop of Mr Yau's visit was YWCA Western District Integrated Social Service Centre where he was briefed on the facilities and social services provided by the centre. He also met a group of youngsters to find out more about their participation in volunteer programmes.
