*******************************************

The Secretary for Labour and Welfare, Mr Matthew Cheung Kin-chung, visited Tsuen Wan this (July 26) afternoon to have vegetarian lunch with some 130 elders and volunteers and get an understanding on the support services rendered to the elderly and dementia patients in the district.

Accompanied by the Tsuen Wan District Council Chairman, Mr Chau How-chen, Mr Cheung visited the Yuen Yuen Institute and had vegetarian lunch with a group of elderly and young volunteers who have participated in an elderly caring programme at the vegetarian restaurant there.

Initiated by the Tsuen Wan District Office and supported by the Asia-Pacific Institute of Ageing Studies of Lingnan University, Cheung Shan Developing Horizon of the Hong Kong Society for the Aged and Lui Ming Choi Lutheran College, the programme aims at strengthening community care for hidden elders or those living alone through visits by volunteers.

Mr Cheung then proceeded to Fuk Loi Estate to officiate at the opening ceremony of the Yim Tsui Yuk Shan Active Mind Centre of Yan Chai Hospital. The Centre is established to help dementia patients and their family members.  Mr Cheung toured the facilities at the Centre and chatted with the elders there to see how they felt about the services provided to them.
