July 2010 issue of the Hong Kong Monthly Digest of Statistics now available

     The Census and Statistics Department (C&SD) published today (July 20) the July 2010 issue of the Hong Kong Monthly Digest of Statistics (HKMDS).

     In this issue, three feature articles entitled "Business Performance and Operating Characteristics of the Transport Sector, 1999 to 2008" , "Consumption Expenditure of Hong Kong Residents Travelling to the Mainland of China, 2009" and "Research Output of Higher Education Institutions in Hong Kong, 1998/99 to 2008/09" are included.

"Business Performance and Operating Characteristics of the Transport Sector, 1999 to 2008"

     With the progress in social and economic development in Hong Kong and the busy trading and tourism activities, the transport sector continues to play a significant role in our economy.  In 2008, it accounted for 6.0% of the Gross Domestic Product at current factor cost.

     This feature article describes the business performance and operating characteristics of the transport sector during 1999 to 2008.

"Consumption Expenditure of Hong Kong Residents Travelling to the Mainland of China, 2009"

     In 2009, Hong Kong residents made a total of 70.6 million person-trips to the mainland of China (the Mainland) for business and personal purposes.  Of all the trips to the Mainland, business travel accounted for 31% (or 21.6 million person-trips) and personal travel for 69% (or 49.0 million person-trips).

     Personal travel refers to travel which is not business-related.  It covers travel in package tour mode and non-package tour mode for purposes such as holiday-making, visits to friends and relatives, and attending recreational and cultural programmes.

     Of the 49.0 million person-trips to the Mainland, 57% were destined for Shenzhen, 37% for other places in the Guangdong Province and the remaining 6% for other places in the Mainland outside the Guangdong Province.  Analysed by length of stay, around 40% were same-day trips.  The remaining 60% were overnight trips, with average length of stay of 3.1 nights.

     In 2009, total consumption expenditure of Hong Kong residents making personal travel to the Mainland amounted to $31.8 billion.  The average expenditure per person-trip was around $650.  For overnight trips of personal travel to the Mainland, the average expenditure per person-trip was around $880.  That for same-day trips was around $300.

"Research Output of Higher Education Institutions in Hong Kong, 1998/99 to 2008/09"

     The promotion and application of new knowledge generated through research and development activities are crucial in sustaining the development of a knowledge-based economy.  Statistics on research output are important indicators reflecting the achievements in this respect and offer insight into possible development of new fields of science and technology.

     This feature article analyses the statistics on research output of higher education institutions in Hong Kong during 1998/99 to 2008/09.
