Information Expo for Secondary School Leavers 2010 opens (with photos)
*********************************************************

An information expo showing the multiple pathways open to secondary school graduates is being held today (July 17) and tomorrow (July 18) at the Discovery Park Shopping Centre, Tsuen Wan.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the Information Expo for Secondary School Leavers 2010 today, the Deputy Secretary for Education, Ms Michelle Li, said the event, now in its eighth year, had always been popular among parents and students.

She said: "With the implementation of the New Senior Secondary Academic Structure last September, the last batch of HKCEE (Hong Kong Certificate of Education Examination) candidates may have more enquiries about their future paths.

"To help Secondary 5 and Secondary 7 school leavers plan well for their further studies and career paths, the info expo features enquiry services and course information by post-secondary and vocational education institutions.

"In addition, there will be talks on various topics including the Secondary 6 admission procedure, tips for secondary graduates, further studies and career paths for different types of study courses and overseas studies opportunities.

"Secondary school leavers, in fact, enjoy diverse choices, including locally accredited post-secondary programmes, professional and vocational education programmes, vocational training programmes and Project Yi Jin. Graduates can choose their suitable pathway in accordance with their own interests, capability and future development plans, and in consultation with their parents and teachers".

Ms Li also noted that a new session had been added to the first day's talks during which some students who have completed their sub-degree courses will share with the audience challenges they had overcome and benefits they had reaped from the courses.

The info expo is held from 10am to 7pm today and tomorrow at Sky Dome Atrium, L1, Discovery Park Shopping Centre, 398 Castle Peak Road, Tsuen Wan. It is organised by the Education Bureau, with the Federation for Continuing Education in Tertiary Institutions, Hong Kong Association of Careers Masters and Guidance Masters and Hong Kong Education City as supporting organisations. Admission is free.

More than 20 post-secondary and vocational education institutions are participating in the info expo. It provides comprehensive information on multiple pathways, including locally accredited post-secondary programmes, vocational education programmes, the iPASS website and Project Yi Jin. There will also be information services for non-Chinese speaking students.

Careers guidance handbooks for Secondary 5 and Secondary 7 students, co-produced by the Education Bureau and Hong Kong Association of Careers Masters and Guidance Masters, will also be distributed. The electronic versions of the handbooks can be downloaded from (www.ipass.gov.hk/eng/hb.aspx).

Joint registration for Project Yi Jin will be held on August 7 and 8 at the Hong Kong International Trade and Exhibition Centre in Kowloon Bay. For details, please browse the website (www.edb.org.hk/yijin/ENG/index.html).
