Public reminded to take heed of water safety advice (with photos)
**********************************************************

Water sports are among popular leisure activities in Hong Kong. Last year, more than 19 million people visited the public swimming pools and beaches managed by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD).

The LCSD and the Hong Kong Life Saving Society organise various activities to promote water safety every year including a slogan competition and a poster design competition for primary and secondary school students.

This year, 7,782 students from 80 schools participated in the slogan competition, while the poster design competition attracted 413 students from 41 schools.

The theme of both competitions is reminding people not to swim at beaches when a red flag is hoisted due to big waves.

The entries of this year's competitions are impressive. The LCSD has chosen the champion entry of primary school section in the slogan competition, and the champion entry of secondary school section in the poster design competition as this year's campaign poster.

Winners of the two competitions today (July 10) received awards at the ceremony of the Water Safety Campaign 2010, jointly organised by the LCSD and the Hong Kong Life Saving Society at the Kowloon Park Arcade. An exhibition of winning entries was also held at the ceremony. Game stalls promoting water safety were set up at the entrance lobby of spectator stand of Kowloon Park Swimming Pool.

Officiating at the ceremony were the LCSD's Assistant Director (Leisure Services), Mr Paul Cheung; the Hong Kong Life Saving Society's President, Mr Steve Lau; the Society's Water Safety Council Vice-chairman, Dr Patrick Wong; the Society's Vice-president, Mr Wai Kam-chiu; and the Society's Water Safety Council Superintendent, Ms Jacqueline Ng.

Winning entries of the two competitions are now on display at the Kowloon Park Arcade until 5pm on July 17. They are also uploaded to the department's website www.lcsd.gov.hk.
