JPC members join to fight drug abuse with summer vacation approaching (with photos)
**********************************************************

As summer vacation is about to begin, Junior Police Call (JPC) members today (July 9) made all-out efforts to disseminate anti-drug messages to youngsters throughout the territory by participating in a variety of activities on the sixth "JPC Anti-drug Day".

Hundreds of JPC members took part in the pledging ceremony in Sham Shui Po District and the pledge-signing activity in Yau Tsim District, setting a good example to their peers by promising to stay away from drugs.

JPC members also attended the launching ceremony for the "Border District Anti-drug Initiatives" organised by the Border District in conjunction with the Narcotics Division, Security Bureau and other government departments at Lok Ma Chau Spur Line Control Point. Besides JPC members showing full support for the summer programmes, non-governmental organisations will set up counters at the control point to provide counselling service on drug problems.

In addition, over 500 JPC members will participate in the anti-drug activities to be staged in Wong Tai Sin District tomorrow. There will be a variety show, and drawing, poster and slogan design competitions through which the message of "say no to drugs" will be widely spread to every member of the public.

Other Anti-drug Day activities included leaflet distribution, visit to the DrugInfo Centre, film shows and orienteering.

A police spokesman said, "Teenagers are advised to make good use of their leisure time and engage in healthy activities during the long vacation.

"We will continue to combat youth drug abuse in Hong Kong and across the boundary. Our educational and publicity programmes will be stepped up to enhance youngsters' vigilance against drug abuse and remind them not to engage in any drug-related activities."

Supported by the Beat Drugs Fund, the "JPC Anti-drug Day" campaign was launched in December 2008. With the joint efforts of Districts and JPC members, six JPC Anti-drug Days have been organised to reinforce anti-drug education and publicity among youngsters and to raise public awareness of the problem of youth drug abuse.
