Over 400 young musicians, who received intensive training from renowned overseas and Chinese musicians at the 2010 Hong Kong Youth Music Camp, will perform Chinese and Western pieces of different styles in two August afternoon concerts to share their achievements with the public.
The first concert, to be performed by the Camp Chinese Orchestra, Children's Choir and Junior String Orchestra, will be held at 3pm on August 1 (Sunday) at the Concert Hall of the Hong Kong Cultural Centre.
Highlights of the programme include Mozart's charming, melodious composition "Sehnsucht nach dem Frˆ¢hlinge"; Bach's "Brandenburg Concerto No. 3"; Papoulis' music for children "Give us Hope"; Sibelius' religious string orchestra music "Andante Festivo"; Tang Jianping's "The Song of Flight" capturing the lively festival atmosphere; Kuan Nai-chung's "Journey to Lhasa" on the folk culture of Tibetans, and the popular folk tune "Moonlight Over the Spring River".
The second concert will be held at 3pm on August 8 (Sunday) at the Auditorium of Tsuen Wan Town Hall, with performances by the Camp Symphony Orchestra, Symphonic Band and Junior Chinese Orchestra.
The programme includes Tchaikovsky's "Symphony No. 4 in F minor, 1st movement"; Lim Kiong-pin's "Bali Dreams" which shares his impressions of the exotic island; Lo Leung-fai's "Spring"; Chen Qian's "Come, Drink One More Cup of Wine" which was adapted from Tang Dynasty poet Wang Wei's poem, and Wang Xilin's "Fire Torch Festival" (from "Yunnan Tone Poem") which was inspired by the celebrations of the Yi people.
Conductors of the concerts are the Artistic Director and Head of the Shanghai Chinese Orchestra and Professor of the Central Conservatory of Music, Mr Wang Fujian; Founder and Conductor of the Tarleton String Orchestra and Principal Double Bassist of the Plano Symphony Orchestra (USA), Mr Jack Unzicker; Director of Choral Activities of the University of North Florida (USA) and Artistic Director and Conductor of Instituto Piaget Vocalizze Festival of Portugal, Dr Cara Tasher; National Class One Conductor of China and former Music Director and Advisor of the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, Mr Cao Peng; Founder of the Chinese Armed Police Band and Artistic Director of the Beijing Wind Orchestra, Mr Li Fangfang; and the Associate Conductor of the Singapore Chinese Orchestra and former Conductor of the Singapore Youth Chinese Orchestra, Mr Quek Ling-kiong.
The Hong Kong Youth Music Camp is a major annual summer music activity of the Music Office to provide intensive training to musicians in a scenic campsite. Participating musicians are also encouraged to take part in recreational and sports activities at the camp.
Tickets at $80, $60 and $40 are now available at all URBTIX outlets. Half-price concessionary tickets are available for full-time students, senior citizens, people with disabilities and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance recipients.
