Hongkong Post today (June 29) announced that a set of four special stamps on the theme of "Biodiversity" will be released for sale together with philatelic products on July 15.
The United Nations has proclaimed 2010 as the International Year of Biodiversity and encouraged people around the globe to devote greater attention to safeguarding wildlife and preserving ecological balance. Inspired by the amazing variety of local flora and fauna, Hongkong Post presents a set of four special stamps featuring endemic species including the Hong Kong paradise fish (the only freshwater fish named after the territory), Romer's tree frog (the smallest frog species found in Hong Kong), Sinopora hongkongensis (a plant first discovered in Tai Mo Shan which is new to science) and Fukienogomphus choifongae (a dragonfly first discovered in Wu Kau Tang which is also new to science).
Official first day covers at $1 each will be offered for sale at all post offices from tomorrow (June 30), while a set of four postcards featuring the endemic species at $8 each will be available at all philatelic offices. For those interested in a preview, the special stamps and philatelic products will be displayed at the General Post Office, Tsim Sha Tsui Post Office, Tsuen Wan Post Office and Shatin Central Post Office on the same day. Advance orders for servicing self-provided covers will be accepted at all philatelic offices from tomorrow (June 30) to July 7.
