**************************************************

The Chief Secretary for Administration, Mr Henry Tang, left for Chengdu in Sichuan today (June 28) to start a visit and exchange programme to the Sichuan and Wenchuan quake-stricken area, together with 1,000 teachers and students participating in the "Passing on the Torch: Affection for Sichuan" National Education Exchange Programme. The Under Secretary for Education, Mr Kenneth Chen, also joined the visit.

Mr Tang said he hoped the teachers and students joining the experiential learning tour would gain a deeper understanding of  disaster relief, reconstruction and restoration work by visiting the ruins left by the earthquake, and also deepen their understanding of the great determination and perseverance of quake victims through visits to the quake-stricken area. He also said he hoped the tour would deepen the students' understanding of Chinese culture and history as well as enhance their national identity.

During the five-day experiential learning tour, the students will visit Beichuan Earthquake Memorial, a communal grave for quake victims and the remains of Beichuan High School to understand the destructive force of the earthquake. They will also visit the Sichuan-Hong Kong Rehabilitation Centre in the Sichuan Provincial People's Hospital and attend a seminar on the national policy of "put people first" and "give priority to people's well-being" to learn about local reconstruction and restoration work.

Teachers and students participating in the exchange programme will later form 10 teams to visit 10 secondary schools in Sichuan to express their concern to Sichuan students and strengthen ties between the two sides through talks, arts performances and interactive learning activities.

The programme will also include visits to Dufu Memorial Hall, Jinsha Site Museum and Sanxingdui Museum to deepen students' understanding of Chinese culture and history. They will also visit the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, Du Jiang Yan irrigation works, Changhong Factory in Mianyang and Sichuan Museum to learn more about the nation's latest developments in science and technology, cultural conservation and sustainable development.

Upon their return to Hong Kong, the teachers and students will conduct learning projects with experiential learning diaries and attend sharing sessions to consolidate and share their insights and experiences gained from the visit with fellow students and teachers so as to further promote national education in schools.
