Police conducted a territory-wide anti-drink driving operation from June 11 to 16. During this period, a total of 2,907drivers were required to undergo the random breath test (RBT). Thirty drivers failed or refused the screening breath test and were arrested. Twenty of them subsequently failed the evidential breath test or refused to be tested and will be charged with the relevant offence.
Since February 9, 2009, 70,405 drivers have conducted the RBT. 395 drivers were either found to have proportions of alcohol which exceeded the prescribed limit (i.e. unable to pass the evidential breath test) or they refused to be tested, these drivers will be charged with the relevant offences.
Motorists are reminded not to drive after consuming alcohol. Offenders will be liable to three years imprisonment, a maximum fine of $25,000, and they will also be disqualified from driving for not less than three months on first conviction and not less than two years on second conviction.
Drivers with a drink driving conviction will incur 10 driving offence points and are required to attend a Driving Improving Course (DIC) before they can get back their driving licenses. Drivers will not be insured if they are convicted of drink driving offences.
Police will continue to conduct special RBT operations throughout the World Cup period. A police spokesman said, ¡§Noting the situation where members of the public taking alcoholic drinks and watching World Cup matches in entertainment premises, police will step up drink driving operations as a measure to enhance road safety.
