Contractor fined for violating safety rules

     Po Mei Project Co. Ltd was fined $22,000 at Shatin Magistrates' Court today (June 17) for violation of the Construction Sites (Safety) Regulations. The prosecution was launched by the Labour Department.

     The case involved a fatal accident on January 12 last year on a renovation site at Shatin.  A worker fell to the ground when a metal scaffold being erected by him toppled.  He sustained a serious head injury and died.

     According to Regulation 38E(1)(a) of the Construction Sites (Safety) Regulations, the contractor shall ensure that the scaffold is erected by workmen who are adequately trained and possess adequate experience of such work.  Any contractor who fails to do so is liable to a maximum fine of $200,000.

     According to Regulation 38E(1)(b) of the Construction Sites (Safety) Regulations, the contractor shall ensure that the scaffold is erected by workmen who are under the direct supervision of a competent person.  Any contractor who fails to do so is liable to a maximum fine of $200,000.
