SEN to attend APEC Energy Ministers' Meeting in Fukui, Japan

     The Secretary for the Environment, Mr Edward Yau, will attend the ninth Asia Pacific Economic Co-operation (APEC) Energy Ministers' Meeting (EMM) in Fukui, Japan, this weekend to discuss with ministers of the other APEC member economies ways to attain energy security through low carbon paths.

     During his stay in Japan, Mr Yau will see the latest developments in environment-friendly vehicles. He will also take the opportunity to promote the green side of Hong Kong.

     Mr Yau will depart Hong Kong for Kyoto this afternoon (June 17). Tomorrow morning (June 18), he will call on the Mayor of Kyoto, Mr Daisaku Kadokawa, to exchange views on issues of mutual concern including climate change.

     In the afternoon, he will proceed to Fukui and attend the welcome reception and welcome dinner hosted by the Japanese government for delegates to the EMM.

     On Saturday (June 19), Mr Yau will attend the APEC EMM whose main theme will be "Low Carbon Path to Energy Security". He will join the discussions with ministers responsible for energy from the other 20 members of APEC on various issues including energy security, energy efficiency and promotion of low carbon emission energies.

     In Tokyo on Monday (June 21) morning, Mr Yau will speak at a seminar on the green side of Hong Kong to introduce its unique and rich natural landscape. In the afternoon, he will visit an electric vehicle (EV) services provider to learn about the latest development in EV infrastructure and battery charging technology in Japan.

     Mr Yau will depart Tokyo for Hong Kong in the evening.
