Government pays two months' rent for public housing tenants
***********************************************************

The following is issued on behalf of the Housing Authority:

Tenants of public rental housing of the Housing Authority (HA) need not pay rent for July and August 2010.

The provision of the two-month rent payment for public housing tenants is one of the relief measures announced by the Financial Secretary in February this year in the Budget to provide financial assistance to the community during the economic recovery.

"The Government will pay the rent in full for tenants and licensees paying normal rent.  As for tenants and licensees paying additional rent, the Government will pay on their behalf the net rent for two months and they are required to pay the portion of their additional rent," a spokesman for the HA said today (June 14).

The Authority will notify the tenants and licensees of this arrangement.

Funding for the rent payment was approved by the Finance Committee of the Legislative Council in May 2010. About 680,000 public housing households of the HA's public rental housing estates will benefit from the two months' rent payment by the Government, amounting to $1.7 billion.
