The Hong Kong Red Cross Blood Transfusion Service (BTS) held the Annual Blood Donor Award Ceremony today (June 13) to present awards to those who have achieved 50-times donations or above (multiple of 25) in the past year.
In 2009/2010, the total number of donors who cumulatively achieved 25-times donations or its multiples has reached 2,337, the highest number in BTS record. In view of the large number of awardees, the ceremony today awarded the first batch of a total of 789 donors who have achieved 50-times or above blood donations, a five percent increase compared with the previous year. The record keeper of blood donation in Hong Kong, Mr Li Kam Keung, has broken his record again at 450 donations. Special awards are presented to outstanding donors in the categories of Rh negative blood, whole blood and combined apheresis and whole blood donations. In addition, awards are presented to the schools and organisations that have outstanding contributions in organising blood donation activities in the past year:
Jean Cassels Trophy - to the Top 10 schools with the highest percentage of participation in blood donations in 2009/10 (Appendix I);
BTS Trophy - to the Top 10 schools with the highest number of donations in 2009/10 (Appendix II); and
Special Merit Award - to Sino Group and Intertek Testing Services Hong Kong Ltd in recognition of their long-term support of blood donation.
Mr Thomas Chow, Permanent Secretary for Development (Planning and Lands), highly appreciated the committed contributions of blood donors. He urged more people, especially youngsters, to support the World Blood Donor Day (WBDD) (June 14) by joining blood donation.
