CHP investigates case of Legionnaires' Disease

     The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health is investigating a confirmed case of Legionnaires' Disease.

     The case involves a 57-year-old woman with underlying medical conditions. She developed chills and rigour on May 28 and fever on June 5.

     She then presented with dry cough and diarrhoea on June 7 and was admitted to Kwong Wah Hospital the same day. She is now in serious condition.

     A urine test revealed that she was infected with Legionella bacteria.

     The CHP's investigation showed that she did not have recent travel history. She lives alone in Mong Kok.

     This is the 11th case of Legionnaires' Disease reported this year. Thirty-seven cases were reported in 2009, 13 in 2008 and 11 in 2007.
