The Secretary for the Environment, Mr Edward Yau, today (June 9, German time) continued his duty visit to Berlin in Germany and met local environmental protection officials to see how Hong Kong could learn from the German experience in going green.
In the morning, Mr Yau met the Senator for Health, Environment and Consumer Protection of the Federal State of Berlin, Ms Katrin Lompscher. He was pleased to learn about the local authorities' efforts in setting up the Environment Zone in Berlin that only allowed entry of low emission vehicles. He noted that such an experience would be very valuable to Hong Kong as the Government had proposed a package of emission control measures to improve the air quality.
In the afternoon, he met Parliamentary State Secretary of the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety, Ms Ursula Heinen-Esser, and exchanged views on issues of mutual concern.
This was followed by a visit to the Urban Sustainable Living Exhibition where he gave an interview to a German TV station on Hong Kong's initiatives in promoting the use of electric vehicles.
Mr Yau today also called on the Chinese Ambassador in Germany, Mr Wu Hongbo, to update him on Hong Kong's latest developments.
He will join the C40 Workshop Get-together to meet member cities' representatives this evening.
