SEN sees latest green technology in Europe (with photos)
********************************************************

The Secretary for the Environment, Mr Edward Yau, has seen first-hand the latest green technology in Europe during his visit to Germany.

Mr Yau today (June 8, German time) visited the Philological Library at the Free University of Berlin to learn about the state-of-the-art energy-saving heating system and unique architectural design of the building.  The library fully demonstrates how sustainability and energy conservation can be incorporated into modern design.

Impressed by its green features, he noted that Hong Kong was moving in the same direction to improve the energy efficiency of buildings.

In Frankfurt yesterday afternoon, Mr Yau visited the MHKW Incineration Plant to see how power can be generated from burning household waste using advanced technology. The incineration plant has now turned into a waste-fuelled power station providing electricity and heating to the northwest district of Frankfurt. It produced and supplied heating for 35,000 households in 2009.

Mr Yau will continue his duty visit to Germany tomorrow.
