********************************

The Secretary for the Environment, Mr Edward Yau, today (June 7, German time) started his visit to Germany to learn more about the latest developments in environmental protection in Europe.

In Frankfurt, he met the Managing Director and Group Sustainability Officer of Deutsche Bank, Professor Hanns Michael Hoelz, in the morning and the two sides exchanged views on energy conservation and sustainable development.

He then toured Deutsche Bank's Green Towers, the bank's headquarters currently under refurbishment for completion at the end of 2010. Featuring a range of green designs, the project aims to reduce the building's energy consumption and carbon emissions by at least 50%.

In the afternoon, Mr Yau attended a business luncheon jointly hosted by the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office, Berlin, and the Hong Kong Trade Development Council. He briefed German business and community leaders on the latest developments in enhancing energy efficiency in Hong Kong that will make the city greener.

He will later visit the MHKW Incineration Plant to see how power can be generated from burning household waste using advanced technology. The plant has now turned into a waste-fuelled power station providing electricity and heating to the northwest district of Frankfurt.

In the evening, Mr Yau will attend a dinner hosted by the Chinese Consul General in Frankfurt, Mr Wen Zhenshun. They will discuss matters of mutual concern.

Mr Yau will depart Frankfurt for Berlin tomorrow morning (June 8, German time).
