Inno-Tech Month in November (with photos)

     Innovation and Technology Commisssion will jointly organise an Innovation and Technology Month in November to promote public awareness of the subject among youngsters, entrepreneurs and elderly, Commissioner for Innovation and Technology, Miss Janet Wong said today (June 5).

     Speaking at the "2010 Hong Kong Student Science Project Competition" prize presentation ceremony at Charles K. Kao Auditorium in Hong Kong Science Park, Miss Wong said the Commission attached great importance to promoting innovation and technology among the younger generation and had organised various kinds of activities every year to develop their potentials.

     She called on the youngsters to actively participate in the activities organised during the Innovation and Technology Month.

     Under the theme "Inspiration from Life, Creativity in Science", the organiser has also set up a ˇ§Green Energy Awardˇ¨ to encourage students to learn more through research and invention about recycling and green energy in daily life.

     Jointly organised by the Innovation and Technology Commission, the Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups, the Education Bureau and the Hong Kong Science Museum, the Hong Kong Student Science Project Competition is now in its 12th year, and has become one of the most popular student science competitions in Hong Kong.

     The record number of entries to the competition this year is most encouraging.  The competition attracted entries from 165 teams totalling 516 students from 72 schools, marking an increase of 32% from the previous year.

     At the final judging held this morning in the Hong Kong Science Park, 21 finalist teams demonstrated their scientific knowledge and innovative talent in front of the judges. In the Senior Division, the winners of the "Invention Projects" and "Investigation Projects" categories went to King's College "Hexose's Oxidation Produces Energy" and Heep Yunn School "Rust Worthy" respectively. In the Junior Division, the winners of the two categories "Invention Projects" and "Investigation Projects"  were "Fast Fabulous Flush" by Heep Yunn School, and "The Disappearance of Iron" by Pui Tak Canossian College.

     Other officiating guests at today's ceremony included Vice-President of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Professor Kenneth Young; Department Head, Department of Biology, The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Professor Karl Tsim; Executive Director, the Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups, Dr Rosanna Wong; Deputy Secretary for Education, Dr Catherine Chan and Assistant Director of Leisure and Cultural Services Department, Dr Louis Ng.
