Combating climate change campaign - World Environment Day 2010 cum Global Warming and Climate Variation seminar series
************************************************************

The following is issued on behalf of the Environmental Campaign Committee:

To echo the global theme of World Environment Day (WED) 2010, the Environmental Campaign Committee (ECC) will hold the WED 2010 cum Global Warming and Climate Variation seminar series tomorrow (June 5) to raise public awareness of climate change and low-carbon living.

"Due to the rapid development of economic and industrial activities in the past century, human beings have massively exploited Earth's energy and resources, which in turn has damaged biodiversity and ecosystems.  Echoing the global theme of WED 2010, the ECC has collaborated with the Polar Museum Foundation (PMF), the Environmental Protection Department, the Hong Kong Observatory (HKO) and the Hong Kong Science Museum to hold the WED 2010 cum Global Warming and Climate Variation seminar series tomorrow," a spokesman for the ECC said today (June 4).

The theme of the event, "Combat Climate Change, Live a Low-Carbon life", aims to disseminate the message of low carbon living and raise people's awareness of environmental protection.  Mr Lowell Lo has been invited by the organisers to share with the public his experience in living a low-carbon life. The founder of PMF, Dr Rebecca Lee; Acting Senior Scientific Officer of the HKO, Dr Lee Tsz-cheung; Associate Professor in the Department of Geography at the University of Hong Kong, Dr Ng Cho-nam; and the WWF's Head of Climate Programme, Dr William Yu, also have been invited to join the discussion forum.  By sharing with the audience their insights into climate change and low-carbon living, the guests will encourage citizens to reduce carbon emissions in their daily life and work hand in hand to confront the challenge of climate change.

Moreover, the ECC has collaborated with the PMF to produce three educational DVDs with environmental protection messages.  An eight-minute preview of the DVDs will be shown during the event to brief the public on the relationships among climate change, the polar environment and the potential water shortage in China.  The messages of conserving Earth and combating climate change will also be disseminated.  Two of the DVDs will illustrate the close relationship between the poles and climate change with 3D animation effects.  Another DVD will explore water resources in China. To further promote environmental protection education, copies of the three DVDs will be distributed to primary and secondary schools free by the ECC and the PMF to appeal for teenagers' active participation in low-carbon living.

During the event, the ECC will also call on the public to conserve water.  The slogan "Shorter Shower, Greener Lifestyle" aims to encourage the public to save energy, reduce carbon emissions and minimise water usage by taking shorter showers.  The ECC will also invite all local schools and the public to participate in this meaningful water and energy saving campaign by joining the related group in the ECC account set up on the Facebook website.

The event will be held from 10.30am to 12.15pm tomorrow at the Lecture Hall of the Hong Kong Science Museum.  It will be conducted in Cantonese and admission is free.  Seats will be allocated on a first-come-first-served basis.  For enquiries, please call 2595 8182 or visit the ECC website (www.ecc.org.hk).

The ECC, founded in 1990, aims to enhance public motivation to protect the environment and to encourage the community to help build a better environment.  To further its aims, the ECC has been organising a wide range of environmental activities including the Hong Kong Awards for Environmental Excellence, the Hong Kong Green School Awards and the Student Environmental Protection Ambassador Scheme.
