More than 150 young musicians from the Youth Orchestras of San Antonio (YOSA) in the USA and the Hong Kong Youth Symphony Orchestra (HKYSO) of the Music Office will jointly perform Smetana¡¦s "Mˆh Vlast ¡V Die Moldau" at a music exchange concert.
Organised by the Music Office of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, the "Youth Passion with Music" concert will be held at 8pm on June 27 (Sunday) at the Auditorium of the Kwai Tsing Theatre.
Under the baton of the Music Director of YOSA, Troy Peters, and the Music Office¡¦s instructor Dr Joseph Kam, the two orchestras will also present a varied repertoire of different musical styles.
Jointly performed by the two orchestras, Smetana's "Die Moldau" is the most popular of the six symphonic poems of "Mˆh Vlast", which is a travelogue depicting scenes along the great river Moldau.
The YOSA will play various orchestral works: three selections from one of the most popular works by Prokofiev ¡V "Romeo and Juliet, Op. 64"; Elizondo's "Estampas Mexicanas" which was inspired by traditional Mexican folk music, and highlights from Gershwin's folk opera "Porgy and Bess", which beautifully blends jazz and classical styles.
The HKYSO will also present another work, the "Vysehrad" from "Mˆh Vlast", describing the Vysehrad castle of the earliest Czech kings, and Wagner's famous "Rienzi" Overture.
The mission of the YOSA is to cultivate musical talent, enrich the cultural life of the community through performances and help students learn the discipline, cooperation and leadership required of orchestral music making. Founded in 1949, the YOSA has represented San Antonio through seven international tours. The eighth international tour will take members of the symphony and philharmonic orchestras to China this month, and Hong Kong will be one of their host cities.
Since its establishment in 1978, the HKYSO has been providing advanced orchestral training for young musicians. Many orchestra members have become eminent professionals over the past 30 years. The orchestra has collaborated with many conductors and soloists of international acclaim, and gone on concert tours to France, Israel, Cyprus, the United Kingdom, Australia, Mainland China, the United States and Singapore for cultural exchange.
The Music Office is dedicated to organising music exchange concerts and community performances for visiting youth music groups from around the world. It also arranges for its orchestras, bands and choirs to go on concert tours abroad and to the Mainland to foster international cultural exchange and widen the horizons of local young musicians.
Tickets priced at $80, $60 and $40 for the concert are now available at all URBTIX outlets. Half-price concessions are available for full-time students, senior citizens, people with disabilities and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance recipients.
