DLCS commends rescuers of drowning victims (with photos)

     The Director of Leisure and Cultural Services, Mrs Betty Fung, today (May 29) presented Rescue Star Awards and Life Saving Commendations to awardees in recognition of their bravery in rescuing drowning victims at sea and in swimming pools during the past year. Mrs Fung called on the recipients to keep coming to the rescue of those in need.

     The Water Safety Campaign 2009 Rescue Star Award & Honorary Lifeguard Incentive Scheme presentation ceremony organised by the Hong Kong Life Saving Society (HKLSS) was held at Olympic House, So Kon Po, Causeway Bay, today. Officiating at the ceremony, Mrs Fung presented awards and commendations to awardees.

     This year, 123 persons received the above two awards, with 103 of them being lifeguards and staff from other grades of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department. Other recipients included staff from various government departments, ranging from Hong Kong Police Force and Fire Services Department to the Government Flying Service, as well as members of the public.

     Also present at today's ceremony were the President of the HKLSS, Mr Steve Lau, and the Chairman of the Water Safety Council of the HKLSS, Mr Eric Cheung. They presented other awards, namely the Water Safety Chairman's Trophy, Outstanding Honorary Lifeguard Award and Honorary Lifeguard Services Certificate to the awardees.

     The incentive scheme aims at commending awardees for their bravery in rescuing others from drowning, and also enhancing public awareness on water sports safety to prevent accidents.
