LegCo to debate a motion on proactively implementing the Framework Agreement on Hong Kong/Guangdong Co-operation

The following is issued on behalf of the Legislative Council Secretariat:

     The Legislative Council will hold a meeting this Wednesday (May 26) at 11am in the Chamber of the Legislative Council Building. During the meeting, Members will debate a motion on proactively implementing the Framework Agreement on Hong Kong/Guangdong Co-operation.

     The motion, to be moved by Hon Jeffrey Lam, states: "That, witnessed by state leaders, the Governments of Hong Kong and Guangdong have signed the Framework Agreement on Hong Kong/Guangdong Co-operation which defines the direction of joint socio-economic development in both places and the major initiatives for 2010; in this connection, this Council urges the SAR Government to formulate and implement the specific policies and measures outlined in the Framework Agreement as early as possible, so as to build an international financial centre with Hong Kong taking the lead with its financial systems, build a modern services base, build a world-class modern economic circulation sphere, develop a high quality green living area which incorporates a regional environment protection regime, and support Hong Kong-invested enterprises in opening up the Mainland domestic market."

     Dr Hon Samson Tam, Hon Cyd Ho, Hon Wong Kwok-kin, Hon Miriam Lau and Hon Emily Lau will move separate amendments to Hon Jeffrey Lam's motion.

     Members will also debate a motion on the report on the collapse of the building at 45J Ma Tau Wai Road.  The motion, to be moved by Ir Dr Hon Raymond Ho, states: "That this Council notes the report on the collapse of the building at 45J Ma Tau Wai Road, To Kwa Wan, Kowloon - K.I.L. 8627 on January 29, 2010."

     Dr Hon Priscilla Leung, Hon Wong Kwok-hing, Hon Frederick Fung, Hon Starry Lee, Hon Miriam Lau and Hon James To will move separate amendments to Ir Dr Hon Raymond Ho's motion.

     Meanwhile, Hon James To will move a resolution under the Fugitive Offenders Ordinance to resolve that in relation to the Fugitive Offenders (South Africa) Order, laid on the table of the Legislative Council on May 5, 2010, the period for repealing an order referred to in section 3(3) of the Fugitive Offenders Ordinance (Cap. 503) be extended under section 3(5) of that Ordinance to the meeting of June 23, 2010.

     During the meeting, Members will ask the Government twenty questions on various policy areas, six of which require oral replies. The agenda of the above meeting can be obtained via the Legislative Council InfoFax Service (Tel: 2869 9568) or the Legislative Council web site (www.legco.gov.hk).

     Members of the public are welcome to observe the proceedings of the meeting from the public galleries of the Legislative Council Chamber.
