Seminars on Corporate Governance for Subvented Organisations well received
************************************************************

Two half-day seminars were held today (May 24) by the Efficiency Unit to raise subvented organisations' awareness of the need to attain, and maintain, high standards of corporate governance and be accountable to the Government and the community for their activities and performance. The seminars were well received.

About 1,000 board members and senior executives of subvented organisations and civil servants, practitioners and academics with an interest in corporate governance attended the two seminars today.

Speakers at today's seminars included the Chief Secretary for Administration, Mr Henry Tang, contributors to a guide on corporate governance, experts on corporate governance, and subvented organisation representatives who have experienced corporate governance reform processes.

By setting out the principles and best practices relating to corporate governance, advising on matters which have raised concern, and providing checklists, the guide will help subvented organisations to assess their current performance and decide whether or what changes need to be made to their operations. The guide is available from the EU's website (www.eu.gov.hk/english/publication/pub_bp/pub_bp.html).

Two more half-day seminars will be held next Monday (May 31). The Financial Secretary, Mr John C Tsang, will deliver the opening remarks at the second seminar while the Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury, Professor K C Chan, and the Director of Audit, Mr Benjamin Tang, will speak at the first seminar.
