Customs seizes smuggled computer hard disks in Sai Kung (with photo)

     Hong Kong Customs today (May 20) foiled a smuggling attempt in Sai Kung with the seizure of 1,237 computer hard disks in 52 cartons and a private car, totally worth about $0.4 million.

     At about 4am, officers of the Special Task Force conducted an anti-smuggling operation in Nam Wai, Sai Kung, and found seven men removing some goods from a private car to a speed boat on the seashore. The officers took action immediately and seized the hard disks. No one was arrested in the operation and the case is still under investigation.

     The department will continue to strengthen enforcement action against smuggling activities. Under the Import and Export Ordinance, smuggling is a serious offence. The maximum penalty is a fine of $2 million and imprisonment for seven years.
