The Secretary for Home Affairs, Mr Tsang Tak-sing, arrived in Hefei City, Anhui Province this (May 15) evening to show his support for the Hong Kong athletes taking part in the 4th All-China Games as well as to attend the Games' Delegation Heads Meeting and Opening Ceremony tomorrow.
Mr Tsang will start his two-day activities in Hefei tomorrow in his capacity as the Chef de Mission of the HKSAR Delegation to the 4th All-China Games. He will return to Hong Kong in the evening of May 17.
He will attend the 4th All-China Games Delegation Heads Meeting tomorrow morning. In the evening, he will attend the Opening Ceremony of the Games to be held at the Hefei Sports Centre to witness its official launching.
The Deputy Director of Leisure and Cultural Services and member of the Organising Committee of the HKSAR Delegation, Mr Bobby Cheng, together with the Hong Kong Sports Sector Delegation, also arrived in Hefei this evening. He will attend the Opening Ceremony of the Games and to cheer for Hong Kong athletes.
During their stay in Hefei, Mr Tsang and Mr Cheng will also watch competitions of the Games in which Hong Kong athletes will participate to give encouragement to them.
Upon his arrival in Hefei, Mr Tsang said he hoped Hong Kong athletes' performance would be enhanced through participating in the Games and sharing their experience with Mainland athletes. He added that the Games would also provide some of the athletes with opportunities to better prepare for the Asian Games to be held at the end of this year. He encouraged them to strive for the best, and to achieve remarkable results for Hong Kong.
Held once every four years, the All-China Games is a national multi-sports event for non-Olympic sports. Comparable to the National Games, it gathers top athletes from all over the country with the aim of promoting sports events among the general public and raising the standard of play. The 4th Games will take place in Hefei from May 16 to 26. There will be 34 competition events.
This is the first time for the HKSAR government to send a formal delegation to take part in the Games. Comprising 92 athletes and 32 staff members, the Delegation will compete in 19 sports events, including aeromodel, billiards, body building, bowling, bridge, Chinese chess, dancesport, go, golf, health qigong, life saving, lion dance, marine modelling, orienteering, rock climbing, roller sports, shuttlecock, squash and water skiing.
