Briefing forum on Report of Hong Kong Council for Testing and Certification
**********************************************************

The following is issued on behalf of the Hong Kong Council for Testing and Certification:

The Hong Kong Council for Testing and Certification will hold a forum on May 31 (Monday) to brief the testing and certification industry on the report submitted by the council to the Government, which contains recommendations to promote further development of the industry.

A spokesman for the council said that the Government had accepted all the recommendations. In the report, the council recommends that the Government adopt a dual approach ¡V making general improvements to the accreditation service and factors of production of the industry, while at the same time focusing particular attention on four trades with good potential for using testing and certification services, namely Chinese medicine, construction materials, food and jewellery.

Meanwhile, further business opportunities for testing and certification services in two emerging trades, i.e. environmental protection, and information and communications technologies, will continue to be explored.

Testing and certification is one of the six economic areas identified by the Task Force on Economic Challenges where Hong Kong enjoys clear advantages and has good potential for further development. The Government established the Hong Kong Council for Testing and Certification in September last year to spearhead the development of the industry. The council was tasked to formulate a three-year market-oriented development plan for the industry and a report was submitted to the Chief Executive on March 31 this year. The report can be downloaded from the council's website at www.hkctc.gov.hk.

A spokesman for the council said that practitioners in the testing and certification industry, representatives from chambers of commerce and trade associations as well as the general public are welcome to attend the forum.

The forum will be held at the Lecture Hall, Hong Kong Space Museum, Tsim Sha Tsui, between 3pm and 5pm.

For details about the forum and registration, please view the council's website at www.hkctc.gov.hk.
