AFCD reminds public not to import animals without permits (with photo)
**********************************************************

A spokesman for the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) today (May 5) appealed to members of the public not to import animals without permits or they would risk prosecution.

Customs officers intercepted a man at Lo Wu Control Point yesterday (May 4). Four puppies without any permit were uncovered inside a carrying bag. The case was handed over to AFCD for follow-up action.

The 59-year-old man, charged with an offence in relation to import of animals without a valid permit, appeared in Fanling Magistrates' Courts this morning and was fined $3,000.

Under the Rabies Ordinance (Cap 421), offences regarding the import of animals without a valid permit are liable to a fine of $50,000 and imprisonment for one year. The import of dogs and cats must be accompanied by a valid import permit and health certification.

To protect Hong Kong from the introduction of animal diseases, the public is reminded to comply with the relevant regulations.

For more information on the import of animals and to report animal smuggling cases, the public may call the 1823 Call Centre.
