Road safety campaign to Promote Safe Cycling
********************************************

Police conducted a territory-wide safe cycling campaign codenamed ˇĄGoldensunˇ¦ to raise public awareness between April 16 and 29, 2010.

The campaign was the latest in an ongoing series of safe cycling campaigns using a combination of publicity, education and enforcement.  Cyclists, especially those engaged in fast food delivery, were reminded of the importance of road safety and their legal responsibilities.

Officers from Police Regional Road Safety Teams visited a total of 821 locations frequented by cyclists, including cycling tracks, railway stations and fast food shops employing cyclists and distributed 22,336 publicity and education leaflets during the first phase of the campaign.

Enforcement action resulted in 433 verbal warnings and the issue of 700 summons to cyclists who committed offences. Offenders committing blatant cycling offences will be prosecuted even during the publicity and education phase.

A police spokesman said that between January and March this year, there had been 372 accidents involving bicycles, 388 people had been injured and two had been killed.  Cyclists on the road are reminded to comply with the road traffic legislation as all other road users.
