Child abuse case in Wan Chai reclassified as murder

     A child abuse case in Wan Chai on April 11 was reclassified as murder yesterday (April 22).

     In the evening on that day, a 28-year-old non-ethnic Chinese (NEC) man and his 23-year-old wife rushed their three-month-old baby boy to Ruttonjee Hospital for medical treatment where multiple unusual and suspicious injuries were found on the baby's body. Investigations revealed that the man had assaulted the baby earlier on. The couple were arrested for ill-treatment or neglect by those in charge of a child or young person.  

     The baby was later admitted into Queen Mary Hospital where he was certified dead at 12.51pm yesterday. A post-mortem examination will be conducted to ascertain the cause of death.

     The 28-year-old man was charged with one count of ill-treatment or neglect by those in charge of a child or young person and appeared at the Eastern Magistrates' Courts, while his 23-year-old wife was released on police bail pending further investigation.

     Investigations by District Crime Squad of Wan Chai District are underway.
